About the Temple

The Surutapalli Temple, located near Uthukottai on the Tamil Nadu-Andhra border, is a sacred site dedicated to Lord Shiva as Pallikondeswarar. It is the only temple where Lord Shiva is seen in a reclining posture on Parvati's lap, which makes it unique in all of India.

The temple has historical significance and is believed to be the place where Shiva rested after consuming poison during the Samudra Manthan.
